Attention Graduate Students:
Update on Jastro Shields

Several of you have asked DeeDee about the call for 1998-99 Jastro Shields Awards.  The department has received word that the procedures are currently being reviewed and changes to the program will be made.  These changes should be announced (hopefully) within a month.  As soon as this information is received, it will be made available to you.

Systematics Student/ Illustrator Seeking Position

Christina Almera, a 1993 graduate of University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, is seeking a position in entomology.  After receiving her degree, she spent one year working with Paul Hanson on a key to the Tettigoniidae (katydids) of Costa Rica, including adding drawings to species level to the key.  She has also worked with Bradford Hawkins at UC Irvine on gallwasps, classifying and labeling the existing collection of parasitic insects found in oaktree galls to species level.  She is currently working as a free-lance illustrator.  Her resume is available from DeeDee.

School-Sponsored Events versus Academic Pursuits

The UCD Academic Senate has announced their policy regarding conflicts between school-sponsored events and classes when either the event or the missed class activity was not foreseen at the beginning of the quarter.  Examples include post-season athletic events arising from the success of a team, rescheduled events, or events coinciding with a midterm which was scheduled after the quarter began.  A school-sponsored event is defined as any event approved by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.  Conflicts with academic work must be resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the student and instructor.  If no resolution is possible, the instructor may award an "I" grade, but should handle such a case in the same way he/she deals with accidents, illness, family emergencies, and other absences beyond the student's control.  The student is responsible, in advance of his/her expected absence, for notifying the instructor and arranging to make up missed work.

FEDIX Web Site Can Help Locate Funding Sources

The Federal Information Exchange (FEDIX) is a free on-line information retrieval service covering federal funding opportunities for education and research.  Participating agencies use FEDIX as an outreach tool and support the service under a cooperative agreement from the Department of Energy.  No registration is required to access FEDIX at http://www.rams-fie.com.  From this site you can also subscribe to FEDIX Opportunity Alert, a free service that automatically performs a daily search of new federal opportunities within your specific areas of interest and emails them to you.
