Ants of the Grand Manan Archipelago, New Brunswick, Canada.
44°34-48'N 66°40-55'W
I collected ants from May to September 1994 using a combination of
visual searches, pitfall traps, and tuna & honey baits. During the
course of the study I surveyed eight of the archipelago's 20+ islands,
including the largest (Grand Manan, 140 km2) and the smallest (W. Green
Is, <1 ha.).
Species richnesses within the archipelago correlate positively with
island size (r2=.83, p=.004), and with the presence of forest cover (Mann
Whitney U test, p=.021). Ant distribution may also be determined by climatic
differences between the islands, differential dispersal abilities between
ant species, and the dependence of the socially parasitic ants on their
hosts.
