| Admission Requirements |
Financial SupportA variety of options for financial support are available from the department and campus. Although the department does not guarantee financial assistance to each incoming student as a part of the admission process, more than 95 percent of our students receive some form of financial support each year. Most faculty have research assistant positions or other types of support. The assignment of these positions is made by arrangement with the major professor or other faculty, rather than by application to the department. Teaching assistantships involve teaching in regularly scheduled courses, usually undergraduate laboratory courses. They require knowledge of the subject and good academic standing. In addition, teaching assistant positions are available in other biological sciences departments. Financial assistance is also available on a campuswide competitive basis from fellowships and graduate scholarships. These include a stipend and usually cover fees and tuition. International students are not eligible for grants, loans, fellowships, or work-study awards until they have completed three quarters in residence as a graduate student at UCD. Applications are considered only once a year, and the deadline is January 15. Specific information is included in the application packet. United States citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. who are not legal residents of California, and qualifying international students may apply for Nonresident Tuition Fee Fellowships. Citizens, immigrants and permanent residents of the U.S. who have been in California for one full year and who, for personal reasons, have elected not to become reclassified as California residents are not eligible for this fellowship. Applications and regulations may be obtained from Graduate Studies. The Financial Aid Office administers loans, grant funds, and work-study employment. These awards, based on demonstrated financial need, are for purposes directly connected with the student's attendance at Davis. FAFSA Requirement: All graduate applicants who will be enrolling beginning in 1995-96 and who are US citizens, permanent residents or immigrants are required to file a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA) as early as possible, but no later than February 28. This form, submitted directly to the Federal Student Aid Program Office, Iowa City, Iowa, is used to determine financial need only, a component of the eligibility criteria for many fellowships, and for all forms of financial aid. The FAFSA can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office in Dutton Hall. Additional financial aid help for minority students can be obtained at www.BlackExcel.org. They provide a listing of over 100 minority scholarship opportunities as well as links to corporate and government sponsored financial aid.
