Michael Parrella, the newly appointed chair of the Department of Entomology, is serving a five-year term through July 1, 2014. “Dr. Parrella is an outstanding administrator, researcher, entomologist and teacher,” said Neal Van Alfen, dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “He is known worldwide for battling pests of environmental horticulture, and with that same enthusiasm, talent and commitment, he will lead the department over the next five years.  He is an inspiring and innovative leader with a strong vision of the future.” -more-

 

Tom SparksBruce HammockScientist of Year: Ties To UC Davis
Thomas Sparks (left), an entomologist closely linked to UC Davis and who was professor Bruce Hammock’s first graduate student, has been named
the 44th Scientist of the Year by the global research and development magazine, R&D. Sparks, a former Louisiana State University professor and now with Dow AgroChemicals, received his doctorate under Hammock at UC Riverside and later took a sabbatical at UC Davis as a visiting professor and researcher. -more-

  Robert PageRobert Page Bee Research Featured in Science
The "honey bee reproductive ground plan" hypothesis that originated two decades ago at UC Davis, with bee geneticist Robert E. Page Jr., is drawing international attention. Page, emeritus professor of entomology at UC Davis and now founding director of the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University, and his collaborator Gro Amdam, are featured in the Oct. 23rd edition of Science, a publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. -more-
  Leal and Syed Groundbreaking Research on Mosquitoes
Chemical ecologists in the Walter Leal lab have identified the dominant odor naturally produced in humans and birds that attracts the blood-feeding Culex mosquitoes, which transmits West Nile virus and other life-threatening diseases.  The groundbreaking research explains why mosquitoes shifted hosts from birds to humans and paves the way for key developments in mosquito and disease control. -more-

 

Matt ForisterMatt Forister to Discuss 'Anatomy of Niche Shift'
Matt Forister, assistant professor specializing in speciation, insect ecology and phylogeography at the University of Nevada-Reno, will speak at the next Department of Entomology seminar, set for 12:10 to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18 in 122 Briggs on "Anatomy of a Niche Shift: Lycaeides melissa and the Colonization of Alfalfa." Forister is the sixth speaker in the entomology fall seminar series, which opened Oct. 7 and continues through Dec. 2.
