  Bruce HammockGrant Renewal Will Keep Biotech Up and Running
A federally funded grant that supports the Biomolecular Technology Training Program (BTTP) at UC Davis has been renewed for another five years. The $2.4 million grant, funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health, was awarded to principal investigator Bruce Hammock of the UC Davis Department of Entomology, who obtained the initial grant 10 years ago, See sidebar on the grant's affiliation with the UC Davis Cancer Center. -more-
 
  Katharina UllmannBee Scientists to Speak at UCCE Pollinator Workshop
Bee scientists from the UC Davis Department of Entomology will present four of the six talks at the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Pollinator Workshop, set Tuesday, Feb. 21 in Woodland. The event, open to all interested persons, will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. in Norton Hall, 70 Cottonwood St.  Among those speaking will be Neal Williams, Eric Mussen, Sandy Gillespie and Katharina Ullmann (right). Topics will include multiple stresses on honey bees; sustainable pollination strategies for specialty crops; native pollinators and squash and pumpkin pollination; insecticides, honey bees and hybrid onion seed production; and creating habit for pollinators. -more-
 
 

Brian JohnsonBrian Johnson: Feb. 17 Seminar at Olson Hall
Brian Johnson, assistant professor at the UC Davis Department of Entomology, will speak on "Organization of Work in the Honey Bee" at 12:10, Friday, Feb. 17 in 6 Olson Hall. This is part of the Animal Behavior Graduate Group's winter seminar series. His major professor, Thomas Seeley of Cornell, delivered two presentations at UC Davis: the first on Jan. 19 and the second on Jan. 20. Both were videotaped by Professor James R. Carey and will be posted on UCTV within a couple of weeks.

 
  ladybugsBohart Museum Sets 'Bug Lovin' Open House
The Bohart Museum of Entomology has scheduled an open house on Sunday, Feb. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. The theme is "Bug Lovin." Feb. 12 is also "UC Davis Biodiversity Museum Day." Open from 1 to 4 p.m. will be the Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology and the Botanical Conservatory. The Center for Plant Diversity will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. (Download directions.) It's also the birthday anniversary of Charles Darwin, born Feb. 12, 1809. He died April 19, 1882.
 
  Damian EliasDamian Elias' Topic: Jumping Spiders
Damian Elias, assistant professor, Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, UC Berkeley, will speak on "Multimodal Communication in Jumping Spiders" from 12:10 to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8 in 122 Briggs Hall. This is part of the UC Davis Department of Entomology's winter seminar series. Elias' host is Leslie Saul of the Neal Williams lab. "The vast majority of life on the planet uses vibrations transmitted through solid objects (substrate borne vibration) to communicate and up until recently, this crucial aspect of animal biology was completely unknown," Elias says.-more-
