Cheryl Reynolds

Interactive Learning Developer
IPM Education and Publications
UC Statewide IPM Program

Current position: Since October 1995, I have been creating educational resources for the Web and CD-ROM. These resources include The UC Guide to Solving Garden and Landscape Problems, The UC Interactive Tutorial for Biological Control of Insects and Mites, A Key to Identifying Common Household ants (http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/TOOLS/ANTKEY/), and The UC Guide to Healthy Lawns (http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/TOOLS/TURF/). These products were developed for urban audiences, primarily Master Gardeners, retail nursery personnel, and others who field questions from the public to improve their responses to pest management questions. I am responsible for researching and compiling information, working with photos and audio, and designing and programming screens. My next project will be to create interactive modules that Master Gardeners and Horticultural Advisors can use to promote environmentally sound pest management information to the gardening public. I will also be creating similar resources for training school pest management staff to implement IPM programs in and around school grounds.

How the IPM program helped me get where I am now: In 1995, the UC Statewide IPM Program was looking for someone to put together a garden and landscape CD-ROM that Master Gardeners and Horticultural Advisors could use when answering management questions about common pests and disorders occurring on 120 vegetable, fruit tree, and ornamental plants. Although I had very little computer experience and virtually no programming experience, I was hired because I had a Master's degree from the Integrated Pest Management program. The IPM program equipped me with a general understanding of what integrated pest management is and familiarized me with dozens of insect, disease, weed, and abiotic problems that occur on several different host plants. I was able to draw upon my education and, with a little computer programming training, complete the project that I was hired to do. My pest management background has helped me as I continue to create IPM-based educational materials for various audiences.
