Project Description:
I am developing an alternative production system for dry bean growers in the San Joaquin Valley. Our approach utilizes reduced-risk insecticides along with altered planting dates to lessen secondary pest outbreaks caused by organophosphate insecticides. By planting beans earlier in the season we hope to avoid certain pests, thereby reducing the number of needed insecticide applications. The reduced-risk approach was compared to a standard, conventional farming approach that utilized organophosphate and carbamate insecticides. This project generated interest from chemical companies and has led to efforts to register several very efficacious reduced-risk products that are less toxic to the environment and beneficial organisms.

Career goals:
Upon completion of the program I hope to continue in pest management either in industry as a PCA, a product development representative, or as a farm advisor.

My thoughts:
The Integrated Pest Management Graduate Group provides students with a broad range of opportunities in pest management careers. Students are prepared for pest management careers in agricultural, urban, greenhouse, and forest settings. The coursework is broad and flexible, and is relevant to the real world. The instructors try to cater to everyone's interests. I feel that this program is a good fit for today's uncertain job market.
