Project Description:
Remote sensing is a tool originally developed for use in the defense and aerospace industries that is currently being developed for use in many different fields. By use of sensitive equipment, light can be detected at different wavelengths as it is reflected from surfaces. I am currently involved in a project to develop this technology for use in San Joaquin Valley precision agriculture (see http://www.ag2020.net for more details). My hope is to use this technology to detect cotton aphid and spider mite damage in its early stages on cotton by comparing remote sensing information to arthropod counts in the field.

Career goals:
I have no firm career goals at the moment but would like to obtain a Ph.D. in either entomology or nematology.

My thoughts:
I like the broad, flexible approach that the IPM program offers. Different fields are brought together, which, I think, keeps it interesting and allows the development of a truly integrated way of looking at pest management.
