DAVIS—A work party to spruce up the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility, part of the UC Davis Department of Entomology, is set from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19.

California Secretary of Agriculture A. G. Kawamura and the newly formed State Apiary Board will gather at the facility, located on Bee Biology Road, off West Hutchison Drive, on Friday, Oct. 3.

“Come join the fun and help give the bee biology facility a well-deserved scrubby-dubby so our fuzzy, buzzy friends can fly with pride during the most important visit,” said Randy Veirs, executive assistant to department chair Lynn Kimsey.

For reservations, please contact Veirs at (530) 752-0492 or by email, rwveirs@ucdavis.edu.

The five-member State Apiary Board is comprised of Jackie Park-Burris of Palo Cedro; Leroy Brant of Oakdale; Lyle Johnston of Madera; Steve Godlin of Visalia; and Richard Ashurst of Westmorland. UC Davis apiculturist Eric Mussen serves as liaison. The board makes recommendations to the California Department of Food and Agriculture secretary on matters pertaining to the California apiary industry. Each member serves a four-year term.

Among the special guests will be Häagen-Dazs representatives and almond growers, with more to be announced.

Bees pollinate more than 90 crops in California, amounting to a value of $6 billion. About one-third of the American diet is pollinated by bees.
