DAVIS--Wednesday, Dec. 15 is the deadline to enter the juried Consilience of Art and Science 2011 Show, sponsored by the UC Davis Art/Science Fusion Program and the Pence Gallery.
The show is set Jan. 14-Feb. 13 at the Pence Gallery.
Work will be selected from a national pool of both fine artists and scientists by jurors James Housefield and entomologist Diane Ullman, associate dean of Undergraduate Academic Programs, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and professor of entomology.
A vital part of each submission is the written statement (not to exceed 100 words), which should clearly explain how the work relates to the connection between art and science, Ullman said. The statement may be displayed with the accepted work.
“The overarching goal of the exhibition is to stimulate interaction and discussion across the art/science divide by exploring the intellectual realm where art and science both reside,” said Ullman.
“By offering the exhibition, we seek to spark new ideas and stimulate new collaborative, interdisciplinary research efforts involving artists and scientists,” Ullman said. “These goals are consistent with the UC Davis Art/Science Fusion Program's mission to bring the creative energies of the arts and the sciences into a mixture that catalyzes change and innovation in learning for people of all ages.”
The Art/Science Fusion Program recently completed multiple projects at the Häagen-Dazs Honey Bee Haven at the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility at UC Davis. The centerpiece is a six-foot long sculpture titled “Miss Bee Haven” by Billick. It was recently featured in the American Bee Journal.
For more information on the event, including how to enter, is available online from the Pence Art Gallery website.
