Pathology

DAVIS —
Harry Kaya, professor of entomology and nematology at the
University of California, Davis, is the co-editor of the newly
published second edition of Field Manual of Techniques in Invertebrate
Pathology, Application and Evaluation of Pathogens for Control of
Insects and other Invertebrate Pests.
The 868-page book, published in October by Springer of Dordrecht, The
Netherlands, is co-edited by research entomologist Lawrence Lacey of
the Yakima Agricultural Research Laboratory, Wapato, Wash.,
Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Lacey
and Kaya also co-edited the first edition, published by Springer in June 2000.
The book provides background and instruction on a broad
spectrum of techniques and their use in the evaluation of
entomopathogens, or organisms such as bacteria, viruses, protozoans or
fungi causing disease in insects.
The second edition includes 40 chapters and 81 contributors, two more
chapters and 12 more contributors than the first edition. The
intended audience includes researchers, graduate students,
practitioners of integrated pest management (IPM), regulators and
those conducting environmental impact studies of entomopathogens.

Lacey and Kaya structured the 40 chapters into 10 sections "to provide
the tools required for planning experiments with entomopathogens and
their implementation in the field."
In addition to insect pests, the editors included mites and slugs to
broaden the scope of the book.
"Due to the uncertainty regarding the future availability of
organophosphate and other conventional chemical insecticides,
microbial control agents
(MCAs) will play increasingly important roles in IPM," they wrote in
the preface. Thus, the field manual provides researchers and IPM
practitioners with techniques and practical guidance for the study and
optimal use of MCAs in a variety of settings.
The editors opted not to receive any royalties from the book to keep the price as low as possible, Kaya said. The hardcover edition sells at Springer for $269, and the softcover for $109.
Kaya is a newly elected Fellow of Entomological Society of America
(ESA) for his contributions to insect pathology and insect nematology.
He will receive the award at ESA's annual meeting, Dec. 9-12 in San
Diego.
