Disposal of Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste must be disposed of through EH&S. You may not dispose of hazardous waste by pouring it down the drain. Each lab must conduct an annual CUPA self audit. [See: CUPA Self-Audit Program]
Postings:
Each laboratory that uses hazardous chemicals must post Safety Net # 13,
Chemical Spill Control. Each person working in the lab should read
Safety Net #13.
Training:
Each person working in the laboratory must be trained on procedures for
spills of hazardous waste and hazardous materials.
Containers:
Use empty reagent bottles for liquid waste. Deface all labels. No former food containers or anything that looks like a food container may be used.
Labeling:
Label all containers with a completely filled out UCD Hazardous Waste
Disposal Label prior to adding waste. [See: How to Fill Out the Chemical Waste Label] The initial date of accumulation is especially important because you must to dispose of waste, through EH&S, within 9 months of the initial date of accumulation.
Segregation:
Proper segregation of chemical wastes reduces the volume of waste generated, reduces disposal costs, and ensures that chemicals are disposed of using the most environmentally sound methods. See Safety Net #43, "Identification and Segregation of Chemical Waste".
Storage:
All chemical waste must be stored in a designated waste storage area. Provide secondary containment for all waste containers [Plastic dish tubs work well for this]. All containers must be kept sealed except when being filled.
Pick-up:
Fill out a "Chemical Waste Disposal List" and submit it to EH&S. You may use a hard copy or online service, EH&S Hazardous Waste Disposal. An EH&S technician will pick up your hazardous waste. EH&S- 752-1394.
