Various local and state regulatory agencies require certain notifications be made to employees in the form of posted materials. These postings will vary depending on what employees are exposed to in any given work area.

For ALL work areas, the following postings are required:

  • Emergency Evacuation Plan
    (Includes a map showing the floor plan of the building where your work area is located and the nearest exit(s) from the building. This posting is created by selecting the appropriate floor plan provided in the IIPP document, Appendix III)

  • Health and Safety Hazards: A Student's Right to Know
    (EH&S SafetyNet #40)

  • EMERGENCY phone numbers poster
    (Police, Fire, Ambulance; available by request from EH&S, 752-1493).

  • Worker's compensation NOTICE TO EMPLOYEES

For laboratories that use hazardous chemicals, the following documents must be displayed in addition to all of the above documents:

Laboratories having specialized use permits (animal use, infectious biological agents, radioactive materials) will be required to post additional documents. Many of the required notifications are detailed below, but please refer to the appropriate Safety Manual to be sure you comply with all posting requirements.

For laboratories that use animals, the following notice must be displayed:

For laboratories that use infectious biological agents, a sign must be posted at or on access doors indicating that biohazardous agents are used within. The sign must include:

  1. The universal biohazard symbol: Biohazard Symbol

  2. The name(s) of the biohazardous agent(s).

  3. Any specific entry requirements.

  4. The name and telephone number of the PI and/or other responsible persons.

These biohazard postings are required at each of the following locations:

  1. Entrances to laboratories and/or animal rooms that use biohazards classified as Biosafety Level 2 (BL-2) or Biosafety Level 3 (BL-3).

  2. On cages or animal rooms used for housing animals experimentally infected with BL-2 or BL-3 biohazardous agents. Rooms that house infected animals must also post the following sign:

    • Animal Handler Precautions

For laboratories that use radioactive materials, the following notice must be displayed:

Additional postings relating to radiation safety may be required; refer to the appropriate Radiation Safety manual(s).
