Safety Contact Duties

Each Principal Investigator [PI] must designate a person in their lab to be a Safety Contact. The Safety Contact should be a responsible person in the lab or the PI themselves. Information passes from the Safety Committee to the PI, who should read the information and pass it on to the Safety Contact. The ideal scenario would be for the PI and Safety Contact to discuss the topic and decide the best course of action for the lab.

Each laboratory must assign a person to be Safety Contact for the Department of Entomology Safety Committee. This person should be a responsible person who is interested in laboratory working conditions. The lab Safety Contact may be called upon to:

  • Attend annual Safety Contact Training session.
  • Maintain and update safety documents and records.
  • Conduct New Employee Safety orientation and training, as well as, annual updates of that training.
  • Conduct CUPA annual self audit. [For labs that accumulate hazardous waste.]
  • Perform the annual Hazardous Material inventory update via CIS [Chemical Inventory System] on the UCD EH&S web site.
  • Assist in Department of Entomology laboratory safety audits.
  • Conduct monthly testing of Safety Showers near assigned laboratory rooms.
  • Other duties as determined by Laboratory PI or as mandated by specific laboratory procedures.
