Safety training is the cornerstone of the Injury and Illness Prevention Program [IIPP]. Proper safety training can make a task that is hazardous to an untrained person into a task that has an acceptable risk to a trained person. Safety training is also the best way to avoid on-the-job accidents. An on-the-job accident might result in permanent disability, expensive rehabilitation and lost of productivity for the employee, as well as, exposure of the PI and Supervisor to litigation. Documentation of safety training protects Principle Investigators and Supervisors from litigation. Provide safety training to protect your employee and then document that training to protect yourself. Entomology is a diverse department and each unit/lab has different safety training requirements. It is the responsibility of Principle Investigators and their appointees to devise and implement the appropriate program for their labs. A file should be established for each employee to save training records. Safety training is a continuing process that should be conducted at the following levels:
The Entomology Safety Committee recommends the use of the Safety Nets-based Safety Training program. Safety Nets are fact sheets that are published by EH&S that provide information regarding health and safety issues or specific hazardous materials. [See Safety Training Table].
