DAVIS—UC Davis entomologists James R. Carey and Robbin Thorp will speak at the May 6th meeting of the Northern California Entomology Society.

The meeting, set in the conference room of the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility, UC Davis, begins at 9:15 a.m. with registration for club members and guests. Speakers will address the society from 9:45 a.m. through 2 p.m.

Carey, a professor of entomology at UC Davis who specializes in insect biodemography and invasion biology, will speak at 9:45 a.m. on “Insect Invasion Biology: Overview of the General Principles and Case Study of the Medfly in California.”

Thorp, a native pollinator specialist and and a UC Davis emeritus professor of entomology, researches bumble bees and other native pollinators. He will speak on “Native Bees as Pollinators” at 10:30 a.m.

Other speakers:

--Baldo Villegas of the California Department of Food and Agriculture will speak on “The Good, the Bad, the Bugly: Controlling Pests in Home Gardens,” at 11:15 a.m.

--Ralph Fonseca of the Contra Costa County Department of Agriculture, will speak at 1:15 p.m. on “Personal Protective Equipment, Including UC Exemptions.”

--Humberto Izquierdo of the Napa County Department of Agriculture, will give a talk on “European Grapevine Moth Update” at 2 p.m.

A catered lunch will be served at noon (see below for menu). Or, attendees can bring their own lunch.

The Northern California Entomology Society meets three times a year: the first Thursday in February, usually in Sacramento; the first Thursday in May, at UC Davis; and the first Thursday in November in the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District conference room, Concord. Membership dues are $10 year. The president is agricultural biologist Matthew Slattengren of the Contra Costa County Department of Agriculture.

Directions:
From the east: Take I-80 through Davis to the Hwy 113 North, Woodland exit.  Go north toward Woodland on 113, but take the immediate next exit (Hutchison – UC Davis) and fork to the left.  Turn left on Hutchison, back over 113 (away from the main campus), and continue west about 1.3 miles.  When you see the small green sign with a white airplane and arrow pointing to the left, turn left.  This is Hopkins.  Proceed south on Hopkins to the end of the farm field on the left.  Turn left on Bee Biology Road (right after the sewer pumps).  The first building on the right is Bee Biology.  Parking is free in front of the building or between the olives on both sides of the road.

From the west: Take I-80 through Dixon to Pedrick Road.  Exit onto Pedrick and turn left at the stop sign, up over I-80.  Proceed north on Pedrick a few miles.  When you see grape vines on the right, that is the edge of campus.  When you see the 45 mph sign, you are rapidly approaching the intersection with Hutchison.  Turn right on Hutchinson onto campus (if you get to the stop at “Cactus Corners,” do a U’ie and come back), and about a mile down the road you will see a small green sign with a white airplane and an arrow pointing to the right, turn right. This is Hopkins.  Proceed south on Hopkins to the end of the farm field on the left.  Turn left on Bee Biology Road (right after the sewer pumps).  The first building on the right is Bee Biology.  Parking is free in front of the building or between the olives on both sides of the road.
