Three-Day Event: 'Where Curiosity Meets Legacy"
EicOsis, the company that UC Davis Distinguished Professor Bruce Hammock (1947-2026) founded to fulfill a lifelong commitment to finding safer and more effective ways to treat chronic pain, will host its inaugural three-day Bruce Hammock Symposium at Palisades Tahoe, Oct. 11-Oct. 13 to celebrate "the extraordinary visionary whose work bridged disciplines and transformed both fundamental discovery and translational medicine."
The theme: "Where Curiosity Meets Legacy."
Palisades Tahoe is located at 1960 Olympic Valley Road, Olympic Valley, about seven miles northwest of Tahoe City. It is on the north shore region of the Lake Tahoe area in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
"Bringing together leading experts from around the world, the program will reflect the breadth and impact of Bruce’s contributions; from the role of soluble Epoxide Hydrolase (sEH) in physiology and disease, and the therapeutic promise of targeting this pathway; to the characterization of environmental exposures and their effects on human health, innovations in nanobodies technology, and advances in translational medicine," the organizers said.
The event will honor "Bruce's deep appreciation for the natural world and the Northern California Sierras," and the :program will include an invitation to participate in outdoor excursions around the beautiful Tahoe area, creating space for inspiration and community in a setting he loved."
The symposium will open on Sunday, Oct. 11 with a special session led by his close friends and collaborators, "offering personal reflections on Bruce's scientific journey, legacy, mentorship, and enduring influence on the global research community."
Over the following two days, "scientific sessions will explore the diverse areas shaped by his work," the organizers related. "Designed to go beyond traditional formats, these sessions will emphasize active discussion, cross-disciplinary exchange, and the identification of new opportunities or collaboration and innovation. The aim is not only to honor Bruce's legacy, but to extend it, fostering the kind of creative, boundary-spanning dialogue that he championed throughout his career."
The program will include dedicated scientific sessions on:
- How do we discover completely new biology? What mechanisms are still missing?
- Exposomes shape biology: nutrition, environment and metabolism
- Turning discovery into therapeutics
- The future of translational science

Hammock, a legendary scientist who held a joint appointment with the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology (ENT-NEM) and the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, served as a member of the UC Davis faculty from 1980 to 2026. He died Jan. 5 in Davis at age 78. Hammock was renowned for his chemistry, toxicology, biochemistry, entomology and human health research that led to elected membership in the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Inventors; scores of professional honors and awards; and accolades from administrators, colleagues, researchers, alumni and students.
UC Davis Tribute
"The Celebration of the LIfe and Legacy of Bruce Hammock" is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10 in the California Hall, UC Davis campus. Organizing it are UC Davis Distinguished Professor Walter Leal of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, College of the Biological Sciences, and former chair of the Department of Entomology;and Joanna Chiu, professor and chair of ENT-NEM.
