May 2025 ENT Student of the Month: Yarely Aguilar

My name is Yarely Aguilar, a third-year Entomology major with a minor in Education, and I’m very happy to be nominated student of the month for entomology! I am very lucky to have chosen Davis since I have been involved in so many opportunities here! Initially, I was majoring in Ecology until I took ENT 10: Natural History of Insects, and became quickly enveloped by the weird, but fascinating biology of insects. Since then, I have not only been learning more about entomology from insect experts here, but I was able to become involved in research through programs such as the Research Scholars Program in Insect Biology and NSF CAMP.

Since joining Dr. Hodson’s Soil Ecology and Pest Management Lab, I have grown to be more confident and curious. I have made a lot of mistakes, but I can definitely say that I have learned so much working with projects relating to nematology and soil ecology, where we collect data on how organic amendments affect the soil community and environment. I also had the opportunity to conduct my own research project with Dr. Hodson about whole orchard recycling. We looked at how recycling almond trees and incorporating them into the soil affected the soil community by looking at nematodes as bioindicators. Nematodes are critical players in soil food webs by affecting nutrient cycling. This affects soil composition, which then affects plant growth, which is relevant to pressing agricultural challenges today.

Most importantly, I have enjoyed collaborating and mentoring others during my experiences. Giving research presentations and participating in outreach events has made me more open to education as a career pathway. I first planned to pursue a research position after graduation, but I have also been looking at science teaching as a career as well. I am currently interning at a middle school and I have been enjoying it! I’m keeping an open mind right now as I continue to explore my interests, but I can definitely say that I am very grateful to be part of the supportive, strong department at Davis, and for my family and friends for supporting me along the way!
